영어로 년도 읽기

1. 1900년대와 이전

• 보통 두 자리씩 끊어서 읽음

• 예:

  • 1984 → nineteen eighty-four
  • 1900 → nineteen hundred
  • 1705 → seventeen oh five (또는 seventeen hundred and five)
  • 1492 → fourteen ninety-two

참고: 2000 이전에는 이렇게 두 자리씩 읽는 게 일반적입니다.

2. 2000년대 초반 (2000–2009)

• 보통 thousand 또는 hundred를 사용

• 예:

  • 2000 → two thousand
  • 2001 → two thousand and one (영국식: and를 넣는 경우 많음)
  • 2005 → two thousand and five
  • 2009 → two thousand and nine

이 시기에는 twenty oh five처럼 읽는 경우도 있지만 덜 일반적입니다.

3. 2010년대 이후 (2010–2099)

• 두 가지 방법 다 가능, 점점 두 자리 끊는 방식이 늘어남

• 예:

  • 2010 → two thousand (and) ten 또는 twenty ten
  • 2024 → two thousand (and) twenty-four 또는 twenty twenty-four
  • 2099 → two thousand (and) ninety-nine 또는 twenty ninety-nine

뉴스나 스포츠 경기 연도 표기에서는 twenty twenty-four처럼 짧게 읽는 경우가 많습니다.

4. 1000년 미만 연도

• 보통 숫자 그대로 읽음

• 예:

  • 55 → fifty-five
  • 642 → six hundred and forty-two
  • 999 → nine hundred and ninety-nine

5. 주의할 점

• 공(0): 연도에서는 oh [oʊ]로 읽는 경우가 많음.

  • 1905 → nineteen oh five
• 영국식 vs 미국식: 영국에서는 101 같은 경우 one hundred and one, 미국에서는 one hundred one이라고 하는 경향이 있음.
• 공식문서·역사수업에서는 two thousand and twenty-four처럼 풀어서 말하는 경우가 더 많음.
